Exchange or rental; one or two of the children may be working in other cities and won't travel.
|December 16, 2019 - January 06, 2020||2 weeks|
Looking for an exchange for the whole holiday of 2-3 weeks, or places to rent or stay as guests in for shorter periods of time in New York City and its surroundings, other major cities in northwest US, California, or Florida.
Looking for adventures in the cities of the world and welcoming you to experience the best of our country
We are a family of five living in the historical railway crossing town of Pieksämäki in the Southern Savonia region. Pieksämäki has about 18,000 inhabitants and is centrally located, a three-hour drive north of Helsinki, Finland’s capital city, where most airlines fly.
Our house in Pieksämäki is an excellent headquarters for your holiday in Finland. You can easily go on trips all around the country, enjoy Finland’s diverse sceneries on the way and discover what a visit to Helsinki or Lapland alone can’t offer. Both roads and railways go to all four points of the compass from Pieksämäki. Four major cities and towns – Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Mikkeli and Varkaus – are all within a one-hour drive, and it takes less than two hours to Savonlinna, where the renowned Opera Festival is held. Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle and border of Lapland is seven hours away by car and fairly reachable. Our own region is a great spot for doing various outdoor activities. There are also plenty of museums, galleries, events, festivals and other attractions to visit in Savonia as well as the rest of Central and Eastern Finland, especially in summer but also in winter. Of course, you can just simply relax and enjoy yourself in the calm, safe neighbourhood close to nature.
We had our one-family house built on a sunny hill top in 2002. The house is 143/195 square metres of area with air conditioning and underfloor heating. It has a garden with a fence. We have four spacious bedrooms with four beds altogether that are 180 cm, 120 cm and 2x 90 cm wide. Our kitchen is bright thanks to the big windows and equipped with an electric stove and oven, a dishwasher, a fridge, a freezer and a drying cupboard. The living room has a fireplace. There are also two toilets, a utility room with a washing machine and a dryer (a wardrobe-like model), a bathroom with two showers, and a sauna with an electric sauna stove. We have free Wi-Fi (no monthly data limit) and a laptop computer, TVs, an Xbox 360 game console, and CD and DVD players that you can use.
We value having our house, as well as our home exchange partners’ houses, clean and tidy and keeping things in their owner’s order.
We have a dog, but you won’t have to take care of him as he stays at our friends’ when we are travelling.
Pieksämäki offers a great space for outdoor sports and recreational activities. Paths on the shore of Lake Pieksänjärvi, nature trails in the woods and bicycle routes surrounding the town invite you for a walk, a jog, or a ride on one of our six bicycles. There is also a proper jogging track about 1 km from our house. There are numerous beaches for swimming in Lake Pieksänjärvi, the nearest of which is only 800 m from our house and is home to the local canoeing club. The biggest and most popular beach called Hiekanpää is in a distance of 1 km and has a football (soccer) field, several tennis courts, and a frisbee golf court in its vicinity. Pond Tahinlampi 5,2 km away is also equipped with a diving tower. The nearest golf court is Anola Golf in 3,4 km, which you will reach in five minutes by car.
There is equally much to do in the wintertime. We have cross-country skiing equipment that you can use, and you will reach kilometres of cross-country ski tracks in the forest when you step out of the door (about 100 m from our house). Flat and sunny ski tracks are often made on the ice of Lake Pieksänjärvi. You can borrow our skates too; a tour skating track is made every year in the Hiekanpää beach area. The nearest slalom slopes are Häkärinteet a 30-minute drive away in Hankasalmi. If you feel like doing some indoor sports, you can go bowling to Varkaus 40 minutes away, where the bowling alley is good, cozy and our family’s favourite. There is a swimming hall 1,3 km away, but you can also try out a Finnish extreme sport and dip yourself in the icy lake – the local ice swimming club maintains a hole in the ice and a heated changing barrack at our nearest beach.
Aside from sports, Pieksämäki’s highlights include the historical museum dedicated to the Savonian Railroad, the exceptional old wooden church, the enormous glacial erratic named Linnakivi, and the Cultural Parsonage “Sylvi” where Sylvi Kekkonen, the spouse of Finland’s longest-reigned president Urho Kekkonen, was born. The gallery of the porcelain and candle artist Leena Heinonen is worth seeing as well. The top event of the year is the international Big Wheels vintage car show which is held every July, accompanied by the vintage and retro fair Savo Vintage. The cities and towns in the vicinity offer cultural attractions ranging from art galleries and wartime museums to escape rooms and rock festivals.
Every one of our earlier home exchange partner families has given us a reference. You can be sure to enjoy yourself at our place too.

About Our Family
We are a family of five. Marja is 60, Tuuli 21, Eetu 18, Turkka 16, and Olavi 67 years old. Tuuli is studying full-time in another city but will be joining us for journeys in summer and during Christmas/New Year. We have a dog called Indy, but he goes away to spend his own holiday with our friends when we travel.
We enjoy experiencing new things, seeing new places and making new friends. We would like to find places that have something for both grown-ups and teenagers.
