Beautiful apartment in Amsterdam center, Netherlands
Our house is situated in a small car-free neighborhood Het Funen, that was developed 10 years ago and is situated on the very last corner of Amsterdam's 17th century-canalplan, today's city center.
It's a maisonette, situated on the third and fourth flour of the apartment block. The front side has a beautiful view on the canal (Nieuwe vaart), the railroad and the wide Dutch skies.
On the rear side, where our balcony is, there is the Funenpark, a residential area with ample of space to walk and for children to play.
The appartement is 115 m2, has 3 bedrooms, a very convenient kitchen and bathroom.
It's a very light and sunny and has a lot of privacy.
There is fast, wireless internet, apple tv and a cinematic beamer that you are free to use. Since Amsterdam is a bicycle city we are of course fully equipped, with 4 bikes in total: one children's bike, one that is good for an adult or teenager and two adult bikes with each 2 children seats.

Our Neighbourhood

We live in the north-eastern part of the city center. Its layout dates from the seventeenth century, when it housed Amsterdam's shipping wharfs. In the nineteenth century the wharfs and shipping industries made it a thriving working class area, that became gentrified since the late 1990ies. While the neighborhood still has a local character, it has also fancy cafés and shops.
The Funenpark used to be a storage area near the railways, and was only developped 10 years ago as a car-free neighborhood that won several design prizes. The park is a great, safe area for children to play, cycle, play tennis, football etcetera. For smaller children there is huge playground.
At 5-10 minutes cycling distance are the Zoo, and outdoor and indoor swimming pool, 2 great city parks (the Flevopark and the Oosterpark), lively shopping streets and nice museums (the Tropenmuseum, the Rembrandtmuseum, the Jewish Historical Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Science Center NEMO, the Amsterdam Center for Architecture ARCAM).
There are many popular cafés and restaurants nearby. To name only a few of them: Amsterdam Brewery 't IJ (next to the mill), the 19th century Zoo-café Plantage, Berlin-style café Roest (see pictures).
Public transport is excellent. Bus 22 brings you to the central station and stops right in the street, tram 10 and 14 that run through the city center are 5 minutes walk. There are 2 supermarkets nearby that are open 7 days a week till 10 pm.

About Our Family
We are four in the house. Son Ries (10 years), daughter Kaat (12 years) and Hein and Petra (both 48). Hein is an educational scientist and works for a national advisory board, Petra is assistant professor in architectural history at the University of Amsterdam.
We love city life and often go to the movies, opera, museums and restaurants. What we like about home-exchange is that it gives you the opportunity to make part of the every-day life in other cities and places.
We also very much love the seaside. In the summertime we often go to the beach, which is only half an hour by train.
