Virginia historical register home on 100 acre estate with pool, near racing tracks, excellent fishing, boating, antique shopping, driving distance to many attractions

Bloomsburg is located on nearly 100 acres. It was built from 1832 to 1837 and was the main house on a large plantation. It is fully modernized. The house is 5800 square feet with a kitchen, laundry room, dining room, large center hall, two drawing rooms, one full bath and one powder room on the main level, three bedrooms, a master bath, guest bath, office area, storage room and center hall on the second floor, and two very large bedrooms on the third floor. We have a pool, and several historic dependencies. We have flat screen smart TVs with blue ray in the kitchen, front dining room and master bedroom.
The property has a 1/2 acre stocked pond, a stream and places to walk in the woods. It is located In the Virginia countryside, but on a main road leading to several small towns and only 50 minutes from the Raleigh, chapel Hill, Durham area of North Carolina. This is a very historic area both for colonial, the pre-revolutionary period, antebellum and civil war periods. The surrounding county has eight nearby wineries, a large art and theater center, the Prizery, and a resort, Berry Hill that was once the home of the third richest man in America. The Blue Ridge Mountains are close by, as are several lakes, several state and federal parks.

Our Neighbourhood

Nearest Airport: Raleigh, Durham - 50 miles

Although we live in the country, grocery stores, excellent restuarants and other amenities are a ten minute drive way. One of our restaurants is rated in the top Ten for Virginia. We live near several small towns linked to Virginia's history in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. We are close to two racetracks, Virginia International Raceway and South Boston Speedway, and several parks, lakes and rivers that have great fishing and boating. Our local Staunton River State Park is a 971-hectare property situated squarely in the heart of southern Virginia, about 40 km north of the North Carolina border. Its landscape of forests and meadows along the banks of the Dan and Staunton rivers are popular with outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. In addition to various recreation opportunities Staunton River State Park is one of only 25 parks in the world designated as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). The park has a strict outdoor lighting policy that ensures an exceptionally dark sky, which draws astronomers from across the country .

About Our Family

My husband and I are the only permanent occupants of our home. However, we have three children and five grandchildren who visit us regularly. It's unlikely that we would be travelling with them because of the difficulty in managing everyone's schedule but if the possibility arose we would inquire. My husband and I are both accountants. I graduated from the University of Virginia and he graduated from the University of North Carolina. My husband was born in North Carolina, while I was born in Wales, grew up mostly in Canada, and still have relatives in England. Members of our family have roots in Japan, Vietnam and Bangladesh as well as the United Kingdom and the USA, so we are a very international family. We exchanged homes with a family in England in 1989 but can't recall the information necessary to list it. We have both travelled fairly extensively.

Lifestyle

We are accountants who retired from Metropolitan DC ten years ago, tired of the traffic and noise. We live ten miles from the nearest town, South Boston, but it only takes ten minutes to drive to the supermarket there. South Boston and the neighboring town of Halifax have a reasonable selection of stores for everyday living. Both towns have lovely historic areas and fine dining restaurants that are considered among the best in Virginia. More stores are available in Danville, a town of 50,000 located 25 miles and 30 minutes away. The cities of Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill are known as the Triangle. They boast the most doctorates per capita in America, great shopping and culture. Revolutionary War sites, such as the race to the Dan, and Civil War sites, such as Appomattox and the battle of Staunton River bridge, are nearby.
It is essential to be able to drive, but the driving is easy and we will make our car available. You can also use our Gator to drive around the farm. We have a small herd of goats, all of which are socialized to humans, and are very curious and sweet-natured creatures. However, they require no care, as they have plenty of area to browse or graze, and are supplied with water tanks. We show photos of them wandering around the house but they are normally in secure fenced pastures.
If you want to stay home we have a pool with lovely views over the fields and woods to the Blue Ridge, a stocked pond and walks in the woods .
