Mountain Chalet in Serene Lakes / North Lake Tahoe

Non-simultaneous exchanges welcome.

Our home is a 1970 split-level chalet that we purchased in December 2017 as a mountain retreat. The home is Mid-Century Modern design and has many original vintage details and period furniture. The main level features a large great room with panoramic windows and open floorplan to the kitchen. There are two full bathrooms with showers. The upper level features one bedroom with queen size bed and reading area overlooking the great room. Stairs to an upper loft lead to another seating area that could be used as an extra sleeping area for a child. The lower level has a lounge/game room, laundry, and two bedrooms with queen size beds. During the summer months the lower level opens up to the back garden with large firepit and level play area.

The house is undergoing upgrades as we restore it; a new Jotul wood stove was installed in 2018 and provides sufficient heating, but until the old windows and electric heat are replaced it can be uncomfortable in extreme cold weather. There are also many other small cosmetic projects (painting, flooring, etc) underway.

We list the house as not being "child friendly" because large openings in railings and stairways may present a safety hazard until we replace these. Older children are welcome.

Sorry, our vehicle is not available for the exchange.

Our Neighbourhood

Nearest Airport: Reno -

Serene Lakes is a mountain resort community surrounding spring-fed lakes high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is commonly known as the “Sierra’s best kept secret” because of it’s natural resources and unique extremely quiet location. At an elevation of 7,000 feet it is one of the snowiest neighborhoods in the United States, but it also sees about 300 days of sunshine. The neighborhood is quiet and very peaceful throughout the year, with the busiest time being summer months.

As part of the North Tahoe area there is easy access to nearby downhill and nordic skiing. Royal Gorge Resort and Soda Springs Resort are less than 5 minutes away. Sugar Bowl is 10 minutes away. The Olympic Valley resorts are 20-30 minutes away. The lakes freeze over and provide opportunities for skating and hockey. Or, sit by the fire inside and watch the snow fall. Note: During winter months a 4-wheel drive vehicle or standard vehicle with chains is required. The roads and driveway are plowed but during winter storms the highway could be closed for a period of time.

During the summer there are many community events on holiday weekends. Activities on the lakes include swimming, sailing, and kayaking. For experienced sailers we have a 1970 Koralle Jr sailboat available to use (requires assembly). There is a small sand beach for sunbathing and swimming. Mountain biking is a popular activity along with hiking on neighborhood trails. Rock climbing and river rafting excursions are available in Truckee. Nearby resorts and towns host festivals and concerts throughout summer months.

Further Afield:

Soda Springs only offers basic services (one general store and one gas station). Truckee is a 20-minutes drive away and has all the conveniences of a small resort town (grocery stores, restaurants, etc). Reno is the nearest city (60-minute drive) with scheduled air service and major shopping. Sacramento is a 90-minute drive away.

About Our Family

Noah and Corey moved to San Francisco in 2017. We have both previously lived in London (at separate times) and have also lived in Dallas, Texas and Seattle, Washington. We have a small dog but no children. Corey works in the technology industry and Noah is a designer in an architecture studio. We have friends and family scattered around the world.

We enjoy experiencing places from a local's perspective, veering off the normal tourist path. We enjoy outdoor activities and cultural experiences. We are a vegetarian/vegan household. We have an appreciation for design.

We have traveled extensively but put it on hold while moving to California. Since purchasing this home we visit twice monthly to spend time out of the city.

Some of our ideal countries to visit in the near-future include:
- Denmark
- Sweden
- Greece
- Turkey
- Portugal

Some places we have visited in the past but would gladly return include:
- Iceland
- New Zealand
- Morocco

We tend to take a longer holiday vacations over the following times:
- Over the Christmas / holiday season (especially to places that have traditional Christmas markets)
- February
- Early Summer
- Early Autumn

We are also open to shorter weekend getaways accessible from California.
