Cozy apartment with a terrace in the heart of Niš

The apartment is located in a new building right in the center of Niš. Although it is in the very heart of the city, it is situated in a quiet and peaceful street, making it perfect for both relaxing and exploring the city on foot. It is only a few steps away from one of the most famous traditional restaurants in Niš, Nišlijska Mehana, as well as many cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, and everything you might need during your stay.
It is a cozy and bright studio apartment perfect for two people, with one large bed and everything needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes coffee, tea, spices, a toaster, and all basic cooking essentials.
The apartment is decorated with artwork painted by my mother, Zana, which gives the space a warm and personal artistic touch. The bathroom includes a washing machine, hair dryer, and everything necessary for everyday use, while the apartment also has a large wardrobe for storage. There is also a small but lovely terrace, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or relaxing after exploring the city.

About the neighborhood

Niš is one of those rare cities that people often discover by accident and then never forget. Located in the south of Serbia, it is the third largest city in the country, but unlike crowded tourist destinations, Niš still feels authentic, warm, and deeply connected to its history and traditions. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has long been known as the gateway between East and West.
What makes Niš especially fascinating is that it was once the ancient Roman city of Naissus, the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor who legalized Christianity and founded Constantinople, today’s Istanbul. Many visitors are surprised to discover that one of the most influential figures in European history was born right here in Niš almost 1,700 years ago.
Just outside the city you can visit Mediana, the luxurious Roman residence built by Constantine himself. Walking among the mosaics, ancient baths, columns, and ruins of imperial villas feels like stepping directly into Roman history.

One of the most iconic places in the city is the Niš Fortress, located right in the city center along the river. Originally dating back to Roman times and later rebuilt by the Ottomans in the 18th century, today it is one of the symbols of Niš. Inside the fortress you will find galleries, cafés, artisan shops, and open-air cultural spaces. During summer, concerts and festivals make the entire area especially lively.
Niš is also home to some of the most important historical monuments in Serbia. Ćele Kula (Skull Tower) is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, built after the Battle of Čegar in 1809 as a symbol of sacrifice and resistance. Nearby is the Čegar Memorial, dedicated to Stevan Sinđelić and his soldiers. Another powerful historical site is the Red Cross Concentration Camp Memorial, one of the few preserved Nazi camps in Europe open to visitors today.

For a more relaxed side of the city, Kazandžijsko Sokače is the perfect place to walk, eat, and enjoy the atmosphere. This old cobblestone street, often called the bohemian heart of Niš, is filled with traditional kafanas, cafés, music, and local charm. At its entrance you can also find the famous monument to Stevan Sremac and Kalča, one of the most photographed spots in the city.
Niš also has a rich cultural scene. The National Museum of Niš preserves artifacts from prehistoric times to the Roman and medieval periods, while the beautiful Synagogue Gallery and Bali Bey Mosque are now important exhibition and cultural spaces.
The city center, especially King Milan Square, is full of cafés, pedestrian streets, parks, and everyday city life. During August, the famous Nišville Jazz Festival brings musicians and visitors from all over the world, while the Niš Film Festival (Filmski Susreti) celebrates Serbian cinema inside the fortress under the open sky.
Food is another big part of the experience here. Southern Serbian cuisine is known for grilled specialties, homemade dishes, local wine, and lively traditional restaurants where evenings often turn into long dinners with music and conversation.
Just outside the city, you can visit Niška Banja, known for its thermal springs and relaxing atmosphere, explore hiking and biking trails on Suva Planina, or discover the impressive Cerjanska Cave, one of the largest caves in Serbia.

What people usually love most about Niš is how easy it feels to enjoy it. The city is full of history and culture, but at the same time relaxed, lively, and very welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you spend hours over coffee without noticing the time, where evenings end with music and good food, and where visitors quickly start feeling less like tourists and more like locals.

Creating memories through travel and home exchange

Hello! My name is Katarina, and I usually travel either with my boyfriend or with my mother, Žana.
My mother is a chemistry professor and she was previously an Intervac ambassador for Serbia. Before the Covid period, we were very active in home exchanges and had several wonderful experiences through Intervac. Every exchange brought us beautiful memories, and with some of the families we are still in touch today as friends.
My boyfriend and I are both law students at the University of Belgrade. We truly love traveling, discovering new places and experiencing local culture in an authentic way. We already had a lovely exchange experience together in the Czech Republic, and it made us appreciate this way of traveling even more.
We are all very active and open-minded people. We enjoy hiking, skiing, nature trips, long walks, exploring cities, trying local food, meeting new people and sharing travel stories. At the same time, we are very respectful, clean and responsible guests who understand how important it is to take care of someone’s home as if it were our own.
For us, home exchange is not only about travel, but also about trust, connection and creating meaningful experiences with people from different parts of the world.
